I was referred to Marc and the team after my folding propeller shed a blade in mysterious circumstances (not fouled, no electrolysis, retaining grub screws present).
I can't praise Black Gang Marine's response highly enough. They came out quickly, took the prop away and diagnosed the cause of the failure. It became clear that the original prop had not been matched to the engine, so Marc identified the correct alternative in discussion with me and then organised the associated work to the shaft and related sterngear. Communication throughout was first class, this is not one of those outfits you need to keep chasing. They also take care to explain things clearly to non-engineers, no flannel or patronising.
With the work complete and sound advice provided for future improvements to the exhaust system, I felt I had benefitted from genuine engineering expertise and had been taken on a journey from "what on earth?" to complete reassurance. I recommend Black Gang Marine without hesitation, and will certainly be happy to call on their services again in the future.

I first used Marc and the team last year to replace a supercharger on my Princess 286, the work was completed very quickly and professionally after being messed around and let down by numerous mechanics. This year I had a seized steering system and the team stepped in to carry out a very awkward job in a confined space. I had a pretty major refit of my boat done by Marc and the guys at Black Gang Marine. This was quite a complex refit and involved multiple systems having to be installed and linked together which is not a typical installation.
The main work was to convert the boat from lead acid to lithium together with a stove change to electric, a replacement generator installed and a new bow thruster. All this work was done very professionally and within budget. The within budget is very important as this is one of the differentiators from other contractors. Marc generally takes longer to produce a quote but ensures that it covers the whole job which means you don’t get any nasty surprises at the end of the job.
The boat has now been sailed from Portsmouth across Biscay and down the Portuguese coast to Lagos before our onward ocean crossings. So far we’ve had no major issues and have been very pleased both with the initial work and also the support that we’ve received from Marc and the team.

Five stars isn't enough! So pleased with everything Blackgang have done for me. The latest is the installation of Dockmate on my Squadron 55. It has literally changed my whole boating experience. Now I can confidently and effortlessly go out on my own or with inexperienced people. My problem has never been putting the boat alongside the berth. My problem was tying up before the boat moved too much. Now I have full, effortless control from anywhere on the boat or even from the pontoon.

Being slightly picky about cleanliness and overall tidiness of our boat, especially in the engine bay, I was delighted to find a team of engineers that shared the same passion and left the engine bay of our boat possibly cleaner than they found it! Something that I have never managed to find before in a marine engineering company.
BGM have been looking after our boat for almost 2 years now and wither it’s the annual servicing, general maintenance or ‘please help’ short notice assistance to an issue, they have the most positive attitude, have kept me up to date on findings and likely costs while resolving everything that we have thrown at them.
